The 2016 Africa Pension Awards

African countries have for long lacked the platform on which to showcase their achievements in several spheres of the global social economy, including pensions.  This has often led to the wrong impression that Africans lack innovation and commitment to excellence. As part of efforts to address this anomaly, the ‘Africa Pensions Awards’ has been introduced to stimulate innovative practices in the administration of pension and social amongst African countries by recognizing excellence, achievements and commitment to the development of pensions and social security in Africa.

The Award Ceremony, which took place on 27 September 2016, to herald the opening of the 3rd WorldPensionSummit ‘Africa Special’ at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria, was intended to create the much needed setting for African countries to showcase innovations and developments in the African pension and social security space. It is indeed, an opportunity for African countries to benchmark their achievements and also foster positive local and global perception of the African Continent.

The Africa Pension Awards, honored winners for excellence in innovations across five awards categories:

Innovations in corporate governance: the National Pension Commission in Nigeria won the first prize, with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority, Ghana, taking home second place in the regulators category.

Innovations in pension operation: Nigeria-based Premium Pension Ltd. The firm also took home the top prize for the deployment of innovation practices to facilitate wide coverage and inclusion category, and Enwealth Financial Services, Kenya, came in second place.

Innovations in the deployment of information, communication and technology platforms for improved customer service delivery: the top prize went to Stanbic IBTC in Nigeria. Minerva Benefits Consulting in Zimbabwe won second place, and National Social Security Institute, Guinea Bissau, came in third place.

Innovations in risk management: was won by Axis Pension Trust, Ghana, and second place went to Social Security Regulatory Authority, Tanzania.

Socio-economic impact of the pension and social security system: The National Pension Commission in Nigeria triumphed in this category winning first place. The National Social Security Fund, Sudan, placed second.

The African Pension Awards, which started in 2015, is an initiative of PenCom and the WorldPensionSummit that took place during Pensions & Investments' WorldPensionSummit Africa Special conference.
